Mainling means "medicine land" in Tibet, because it is well-known for rare herbal medicine produce since ancient times. Mainling County is located in the east of the Tibet Autonomous Region, at the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River, and between the Nyainqentanglha Mountains and the Himalaya Mountain. Mainling County has a population of 15,000, and covers an area of 9,471 square kilometers, and forest covers 48.11 percent of it. The average altitude is 3,700 metres above sea level.
